A warm Welcome!

Hello All,

There was a request by a new student that we write a post providing information about Wellington. While it is impossible to cover everything, I hope this helps. So, here goes:

First thing’s first: Accommodation

Wellywood Backpackers
58 Tory Street
Te Aro
Wellington City
Tel (04) 3813899

Base Wellington
21-23 Cambridge Terrace
Tel (04) 8015666

These are just two options... but there are a lot more in town.

If you are looking for a place to rent, try looking at Trademe Properties (signup for free!), or if you are a student at Victoria University, check out their accommodation service.

There are a few banks in town along (and near) Manners st.

1. National Bank Manners St
Te Aro, Wellington

2. ASB Bank Manners

3. Westpac Willis Street

Okay, now that you have opened a bank account, it’s time to go shopping. :P

Extra info:
There is an Asian supermarket right next to Pak'n'Save. There is also a market every Sunday (7 am-2pm) that sells fresh fruits, veggies etc. on Willis st. It’s on the car park next to Unicomm Cumberland House. Oh, and one more thing, Turks chicken is the only halal brand that I know so far. You can get that from New World or Pak n Save.

Missing people at home? Why not give them a call? There are a lot of phone cards to choose from : Yabba, Kiwicall, Easycall, etc. You can get these from 24-hour convenience stores like Starmart (there are a few in town). Just find one that you think gives the best rate!

If you want to keep yourself updated with the things happening in New Zealand, you can go to: http://www.stuff.co.nz. That’s where I get my news from. :P

If you are still confused about all the information above (like the location of these places), you can just type in the addresses given on to Google maps :) or another alternative is Wises at http://www.wises.co.nz.

You can find the bus/train timetables on the Metlink website.

If you have any questions at all, just email us: wmsonz@gmail.com.

Happy exploring Wellington!
